If you have just moved to a new town or if you are looking for a salon with more services, there are several important things you need to look for. Not only do you want to find a salon that has just the right price and the right professionalism, you need to have that special connection with your stylist. In the same way you need to have a connection with your doctor and your lawyer, you need to have a special relationship with your stylist. Here are just a few important things you need to keep in mind as you hunt for a new salon and stylist.
The single most important factor in picking a stylist is communication. When you sit down in the chair, you need to know that your hairdresser is listening to you and understands how important this appointment is to you. If you get up and your hair looks nothing like you asked, you obviously have a big problem. Your hairdresser also needs to understand things like age-appropriateness, cost and personal preferences, as well. If you find that the two of you just aren’t on the same wavelength, you may want to look elsewhere.
Location is another important factor when picking a stylist. We have all had fashion emergencies. We don’t want to have to ride halfway across town to get things fixed up when they go wrong. If you can have a stylist that is within walking distance of your home, that’s great.
Cost is something that is on everyone’s mind right now, especially in this economy. Since more and more people are headed to salons for spa-like treatments, including waxing, sunless tanning and styling, having package deals available that help keep costs down is important. Looking beautiful has never been cheap, but it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg, either.
There is something to be said for going to the hottest salon in town. They likely have the best hairdressers, the best quality product and the most advanced training, but if you can’t get in the door, what’s the point? Some salons have waitlists that stretch for months, so while these spots may give you your best look, you may want to go with a place that you can be seen on short notice. You don’t want to be left out in the cold when you need help the most.
The final ingredient is something you likely won’t experience until your fourth or fifth visit with your hairdresser. That ingredient is absolute confidence. For example, when I go to see my hairdresser, I simply tell her to do whatever she wants. I know I’ll look fabulous, even if it takes her an hour and a half. I have supreme confidence in her ability and in her vision. She sees hair as a canvas that she can perform on and when she’s done, I get looks like never before. Once you have that, you should sink your claws into your hairdresser and never let go.
